“You helped us see that mastering inclusion isn’t about getting everything right — it’s about showing up, listening, and learning. We’re now more open with each other, and we’ve started to create the kind of team culture where everyone feels they belong.”

A management group was experiencing difficulties with diversity and inclusion. Although new, diverse members were joining the organisation, they often struggled to integrate and connect and feel belonging. The CEO recognised that while no one intended to exclude, the group’s habits and outlook were shaped by limited exposure to different communities and perspectives. As a result, people were often offended by each other’s blind spots.

The CEO worried that unintentional exclusion and lack of awareness about diversity could undermine both team cohesion and customer relationships. The challenge was twofold:
- Internal: building trust, safety, and awareness so new members felt welcome and included
- External: developing the capacity to understand and reflect the diverse perspectives of their customer base.

I facilitated a group coaching process focused on mastering inclusion and relational awareness. Together, we:
- explored concepts of diversity, privilege, power, and fairness in the context of their team culture.
- created a safe and open learning environment, contracting to give everyone permission to make mistakes, ask questions, and reflect without judgement.
- practiced inclusive skills such as deep listening, cultural curiosity, and actively inviting in diverse voices.
- helped the team leader and members see how everyday relational moments shape inclusion and exclusion.

The group developed a stronger awareness of their own blind spots and relational habits. They grew more confident in discussing sensitive issues openly and respectfully as a group. Practical changes were introduced, such as more inclusive meeting practices and greater attention to whose voices were missing from conversations. The team began to take shared ownership to creating a safer, more welcoming environment.
