Case study: Resetting team expectations

The Situation

After an extended period of remote working, a department within a professional services firm began transitioning to a hybrid work model. While operationally effective, the team recognised the need to reset expectations and revisit how they collaborated, communicated, and maintained connection in this new context. There was a general sense of disconnection and a lack of clarity about how best to use the limited time they now had together in person.

The Challenge

Although the team functioned well on the surface, a Team RQ assessment and relational network mapping revealed deeper issues. Psychological safety was present — but only within close working subgroups, not across the wider department. Trust and collaboration had become siloed. Without strong cross-team relationships, decision-making was slower, communication more fragmented, and the social glue that had previously held the department together had begun to loosen.

What we did together

A one-day Team Reset Workshop was designed and delivered to address these issues. The Team RQ and network map insights were used to guide the session, helping the team explore their strengths around relationships and team processes, and where efforts were needed to rebuild cohesion. Structured dialogue helped surface unspoken expectations and clarify what mattered most in making the hybrid model work. Subgroups were invited to co-design elements of an action plan, giving everyone a voice and reinforcing shared ownership of the changes.

The Outcome

The workshop provided a safe but honest space for reflection and reconnection. The team leader used the session to re-establish expectations and commit to a plan focused on rebuilding social connection across the department. Participants reported renewed clarity and commitment, and a stronger sense of belonging beyond their immediate teams — laying the foundation for a more integrated, hybrid future.
